The borough is home to over 10,000 employing establishments, providing over 122,000 jobs. It has seen a significant increase in both jobs and businesses over the 6 years from 1999 to 2005, with the city in 2005:
- Providing nearly 15,000 jobs
- Being home to an additional 1,500 employing establishments

Table 1 confirms the success of the Milton Keynes economy and its strong record of employment growth.
Between 1995 and 2004 Government data shows the number of jobs within the city increasing by over 36% - over double the national increase and close to double the increase in the South East.
Milton Keynes continued to outperform both the South East and Great Britain:
- Between 1995 and 2000 – the annual rate of job growth in Milton Keynes was 5.5%. The comparable figures for the South East was 3.9% and Great Britain 2.2%
- Between 2000 and 2004 – the annual rate of job growth in Milton Keynes was 1.7%, and only 0.2% for the South East and 0.8% for Great Britain
